kara

A self-described hermit crab who delights at never having to leave the house, this small-town Ontario girl who grew up in the era of Pong and the Easy-Bake oven spends her spare time playing piano, baking pies and thinking of names for the puppy she’ll one day have. Montreal is where Kara calls home these days, but she continues to explore worlds near and far through audiovisual means. Her favourite colour might be ochre, but when it comes to video creation, her palette is endless.

As a director and editor, Kara has a wide array of film, video and installation projects to her credit. She studied film production at Ryerson University before pursuing a graduate degree in visual arts at Concordia University. In parallel to her filmmaking work, she has contributed motion design and graphics to a great many film and television productions, including Sisters: Dream & Variations, Catherine’s first film. For this project, Kara worked on the animations with the film’s subjects, who created the illustrations for the scenes, offering guidance as well as technical and creative input. Her work on LARRY (they/them) takes much the same approach; she also animates the illustrations of Nina, an artist who’s one of the film’s subjects.

Kara loves being part of projects sparked by interesting ideas and fuelled by artistic integrity. As for her rapport with gender, she likes to quote Patti Smith: “As far as I'm concerned, being any gender is a drag.” This mindset informs her work as a filmmaker, which draws on multiple art forms, particularly her love of sound and music, to blend fact and fiction into compelling hybrid forms.
